Hi guys,

Camp is this coming Tuesday to Thursday.

The purpose of the camp will be largely to prepare for SYF.

Non-SYF people will also be present, for some other activities that we'll have between practices.

To the non-SYF people, i must really emphasize that you DO form an important part of our group, and play an important role in SYF, which is the stagehands. It doesn't sound important, but trust me it is.

Camp cost is $25, and if you do not bring the consent form SIGNED by your parent on Tuesday then we'll have to call your parents to personally make sure they allow you to come for the camp.

Bring the camp cost, IN ADDITION to extra money on Tuesday.

If you are only able to make it for 1 or 2 days of the camp, i.e not the full duration of the camp, please indicate it on the consent form. We will try to amend the camp cost according to the duration in which you stayed at the camp.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE DO MAKE IT FOR TUESDAY 3.00PM TO 7.00PM. thats the period where we'll be sound-checking the SYF venue, Republic Polytechnic. it is of the UTMOST importance you make it for this time-slot.

Dear HCISO,

SYF is just around the corner. In fact, just next month. NEXT MONTH.

And what do I see? People playing computer games before practice. People lying about on the floor. Almost no one practicing. Everyone completely relaxed.

SYF is a very important competition for us. It is a reflection of our standards against all other schools. It is the cumulation of our efforts over the past 2 years in-between SYFs to improve.

Every year we have clinched the Gold award.... always 1 or 2 marks away from the highest award: the Gold With Honors. The feeling of knowing it was just 1 or 2 marks away is... highly depressing, to say the least.

And last year we didn't do well. We only managed a Silver. For those of you who were there... you know the feeling of only managing a Silver. We felt horrible. We had worked so hard to attain the Gold With Honors.... yet we had slid back; to a Silver. What was this? We honestly felt we had let our seniors down. We had caused the dip in standards. We were miserable. We wanted more.

Truthfully though, we knew that that year, 2009's Judging had not been the most fair. That was our sole consolation. We knew we couldn't do much about that.... But maybe at the next SYF, we could do more. Convince the judges no matter how skewered their critera were, IF they were, that we still deserved Gold With Honors. And truthfully in our hearts then, we WERE Gold With Honors standard.

Next month's SYF will BE that "next SYF". All our hopes and disappointments from the last SYF will be snowballed into that one slot. Will we succeed our fail? Will we have to face such disappointment again? Or not? This is a question we cannot answer yet.... but we can work our hardest to make that answer a 110% success. It is now UP TO YOU.

I remember when i first joined HCISO, there was a motto. Its still at the bottom of our homepage on this blog. Do YOU have the Passion?

Times may have changed between the first time this motto was coined and now, but everyone should still want the best for our CCA. This is where we all have felt at home, where we have grieved and celebrated many triumphs and letdowns. And this is where many more batches of HCISOians, including this year's Sec 1s, will share all these emotions.

Its time to start working harder for this. For our success. For Gold. With. Honors.

this is your (cash) friendly logistics guy. Anyway, we have already bought the earplugs and blindfolds in bulk. We ~~have decided to mark up the prices and sell 1 set of earplugs + blindfolds for $3.00~~ are selling 1 set of earplugs and blindfolds for $1.50. The earplugs are the foam type while the blindfolds are black in colour, for your information.

So, please remember to bring $1.50 tomorrow. And just a quick reminder, those who haven't paid for last week's and the previous week's meal (Tori-q and Pizza Hut, $4 and $6 respectively), please bring the money tomorrow. Spencer's feeling poor because he lost the game.

Regarding the blindfolds and earplugs, the ExCo will be buying in bulk, then reselling to you.

The price so far has been unconfirmed, but the blindfolds might be about not more than $3, and the earplugs not more than $2.

Hi guys.

I just realized PoHan's post about practice being like COD was the 555th post on this blog... coincidence? haha.

Just to update you guys, there will be NO PRACTICE ON WEDNESDAY for the SYF team. Because its cross-country and we know you'll be very tired after running.

Also, the non-SYF does not have to come on Wednesdays at all. Your practice will be limited to Mondays and Fridays, 4pm-6pm and 2.30pm-4.30pm respectively.

In addition to the HCSE concert, NUS Symphony Orchestra has invited us to attend their concert.

Here are the details.

The Hwa Chong String Ensemble (the JC-side string ensemble), is holding a concert on the 28th of February.

Here are the details:

Hi guys.

For the benefit of those who weren't at practice today, here's what we're going to do on Friday.

-Everyone will have 3-5 votes to vote for top 3-5 hardest parts of our SYF pieces.

-We'll collate the data and show the results.

Purpose of this activity will be for different sections to know and understand how the pieces are like for other sections, so while practicing we can take note of which places require more practice by which sections.

And another thing, assessments will be carried out for all players around the month of February; so make sure you can play! (:

Hi ppl again,

Sorry to have held you guys back for so long after the last grp. There was supposed to be 2 more classes, but idk what happened to them, perhaps they got lost -.-

Anyway, I just want to say that you guys really did a damn good job. The proof is that we have 40 applicants per se, 3 of which have violin grd 8, and lots more have >grd 5 violin/piano, one with piano ATCL, one cello grd 6, and so on. Compared to previous batches, it's really very good in terms of amount of talent, and last year from what I heard we only had like 20+ people. So I'd like to say THANKS to:

Yu Hao for doing all the talking and etc cos I couldn't have done that

Kai Wen for arranging the chairs and stands etc, I think

"Ushers", Po Han, Alvin, Yuding, for doing damn well at controlling the traffic and all

Jarel, Titus, bassists, for playing random solos whenever we needed them

Spencer for doing saikang i.e. drawing lines on foolscap (btw I like your handwriting)

Shawn, for your presence (cos your presence is kinda enough to help) especially with regards to the Aphelion groups

Last but not least, everyone for playing the same old pieces again and again for the Sec 1s, even though I know you all were pretty sian. And doing it well, and doing it with discipline. I'm particularly impressed with lower strings, especially the ppl at the back, because I can tell you all really put in effort for this, and we're very grateful for that. Upper strings... even though I still feel you all didn't play loud enough -.- but it can partially be accounted for by the fact that He Kai and I didn't play for most of the time, and in the end I don't think it really mattered that much. Sorry for being slightly gl when conducting HAHA.

I think I shall end off with this: you guys totally pwned me cos I was the only one playing after the designated... stopping place. That says a lot alr :D

Reminder again: Report to orch room at 215pm SHARP. We need to be ready for the first group of Sec 1s who will be coming at 230pm, plus I have a few things I want to talk to you all about, so we really really (kinda really) need your cooperation here. If it's any incentive to come, Wed's not gonna be like normal practice, it'll be much less sian than just playing pieces again and again, plus you all have lots of time to slack lol. So pls do be enthu, for the sake of being enthu lol otherwise whole event will be very fail ._.

If you are coming late/leaving early/cannot come, you are required to fill in the attendance form as per normal practice.

Exco, be at orch room by 200pm. Will fine if you are late without valid reason.

-starting 2010 january until SYF is over, we will have 3 practices per week. Monday. Wednesday, and Friday. the timing of practices will be announced when our next-year timetables are out.

Hey guys.

People who have to practice tuning (in no particular order):

But that doesn't mean the rest don't have to practice. You have many other things to practice. Tuning is only the first step. The second step is to practice with a metronome. Theres the're many more.

So, anyway, practice will start at 8.30am with sectionals.

Lunch break will be from 12pm to 1pm,

then further practice from 1pm to 4pm.

In other words, its a full day practice.

We seriously need to buck up. I know its the holidays, but we can't slack all the way. We have almost the least number of practices before the holidays for any string orchestra/ensemble. Another thing, RISE, raffles institution string ensemble, has invited us to attend their concert, RenaIsSancE on the 10th of December, friday, at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Orchestra Hall, at 7.30pm. Tickets are at $10 each, and Jonathan Shin, winner of the 2010 conservatory competition for piano, will be performing too. RISE isn't a bad ensemble, and it would be good for us to go for more concerts in general. Maybe some of you guys have bad sentiment towards people from RI, but they really aren't bad people at all. Maybe you could take this chance to socialize with them a bit.

Honestly, i am rather disappointed with you people. The holidays are the times when most people are free with nothing to do, yet you still don't turn up for concerts. I can understand why no one went for the MGS concert, because we all had exams (which is very pai seh to them), but holidays? come on. Go for a few concerts people.

Also, HCI Band is having a concert on the 11th of december, at ChengYiLou auditorium (JC side). They've invited us to attend their concert, and i'm sure at least a few of you will appreciate our own hwa chong family. With regards to the people who wish to attend the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra's rehearsal, Ms Ting was unfortunately unable to book the tickets. 1-3 sets of clothes (Its 2day 1 night, with most of the 1 day gone, make your own decision)

Sleeping Bag (there wont be enough space on the beds to fit all)

Toiletries (Tooth brush, towel, just in case you were wondering, as well as lotion, make-up, deodorant or whatever =) )

MONEY $$$ ( $10 each thank you very much, covers chalet expenses. Also, please bring along extra cash for what er, bowling, wild wild wet etc. idk, there will be free and easy, and there's lots of facilities at downtown east that require money)

Swimming wear (Optional, theres Wild Wild Wet there at downtown east)

Last but not least, STUFF THAT PAST TIME =) cards, board games, idk, if you think it will help, cause at night if you're gonna stay up late with no games, good for you

okay within pasir ris downtown east area there are two chalet resorts....one is costa sands resort downtown east, the other one is costa sands resort pasir ris...one is very different from the other... should be costa sands downtown east (hekai help me confirm...), else big trouble...

on monday after practice, you guys will go for lunch first (: then y'all can put your stuff in the chalet once all the check in stuff is done...while that, it's free and easy. report back at 7 for barbeque (:

Hey fellow String Orchers,

Although some of you will complain like "no time", "so boring", "too expensive" etc.etc. , I strongly encourage all of y'all to try and go for some concerts, most preferrably string orchestra concerts.

Not all concerts of this sort will make you sleep (although I do admit some will =.=) but most importantly you learn how other people play---by hearing their sound quality and seeing how they function as an orchestra, there WILL be learning points that can be taken away IF you are attentive enough.

Also, these concerts that are posted on the blog, if a good response is received, will be a good platform for y'all to get to know one another better. Remember we are one orchestra, thus we need to work together to make things work, and the first step is to get to know each other better, preferrably not only through practice, but also through outings (concerts etc.)

To push yourself to a higher level of music appreciator/better music player, I once again encourage all of y'all to go for these concerts.

It's been a smooth transition on to the sec 3 batch, and they've successfully taken over from the sec 4s in terms of running the orchestra. The sec 4s, however, will still be coming back periodically to make sure that everything's going fine in the orchestra.

Hey Orc members,

For the next 3 weeks, we will be having a break from orc, as through all the practices and concerts in Melbourne/JB, we know y'all are all tired and thus we give you this break to rest.

However, this is NOT an excuse to stop practicing. We will most be probably starting on the SYF piece when practice resumes,
so PLEASE go and try out the SYF piece unless you want to waste time on inefficiency on practices again...and bear the scolding of Mr. Sze...

Further updates will be posted very very soon.

IMPORTANT ADMIN MATTERS:

EDIT: All members are released at 12 and will report to the orch room for a briefing.

- Report to orch room, help to carry stands and set up the Drama Centre.

- Lunch break will be from 1pm-1.45pm and it will be provided.

- Practice commences at 2pm in the Drama Centre.

EDIT: For those not playing for the combined pieces, you will be practising for our own pieces in the orch room, with He Kai leading the practice.

Just a personal notice here: has anyone seen my thumbdrive & correction tape in the orchestra room? I left my pencil box in the room on monday and my thumbdrive and correction tape are currently missing. Thumbdrive has a 'metallic' colour and the correction tape has a green casing. yeah hi everyone. Its been a long time since I posted anything on this blog.
I would just like to retype the thank you speech i made here, for the benefit of those who would like to hear it but didn't. Also, i have a few things i should have said but didn't. I shall write it here.

Thanks, to all of you who supported me. I hope i will be able to fulfill your expectations of me and be able to lead this orchestra to greater heights. To those of you who didn't, i do also hope that I will have your full support so that we can all work together. To those of you in-between and still undecided, well I hope you'll be able to trust me that i do have this orchestra's best interests at heart.
That being said, one man alone cannot support an entire orchestra. Yes, I am referring to my vice-chairs Jonathan Yong and Yu Hao. They are both very capable people who also will need your support in this coming "term of office". Please do support them. (:
What i plan to focus on as chairman, is firstly, SYF. SYF is next year, not a long way off, considering. I hope that we will be able to work just as, if not harder than last year for this competition. Other than SYF, bonding activities are also a very important thing i feel we must keep. We are one CCA and so we should know each of us better.
Yup the challenge may be daunting but I pledge that I will give it my best and commit to this orchestra to the best I can. Thanks everyone.

Uh, oh yeah one more thing. Other than the chair and vice-chairs, this orchestra requires an EXCO.
I would like to urge willing sec 3s and aspiring sec 2s to apply to be in the ExCo, by following the instructions of sean's post below.

Also, applications for Exco 2010/2011 are open and interviews will be conducted on coming monday (21 june) afternoon from 2pm onwards.

All are encouraged to apply, you need not be sec 3 to do so.

Seniors like alwyn, alvin and run xian will also be playing for this concert. Do go and support them! :D

New Attendance-taking Method

Dear all,

There will be a new attendance-taking method with effect from 4th June's practice (this Friday). Please take note of this and follow this method for this Friday's practice.

For every subsequent practice,
1) Read the orchestra blog and follow the link to the attendance form.
2) Key in relevant details at least 2 days before practice; if your attendance is not found on the night of the day before practice, your attendance will be counted as absent.
3) Please accompany your reasons for late arrival or absence with a soft copy proof to be sent to the ExCo email, at hcistrings@gmail.com, or submit a hard copy proof to your section leaders by next practice.
